Undergraduate Student Awards

Several philosophy majors won awards from the department for 2007-2008. Ralista Daskalova won the Kuiper-DeBoer Award. James Crouch won the Matchette Award. Brenton Kenkel and Will Sanders each won the Senior Achievement Award. Congratulations to our undergraduates for their fine work in the program.

Contributions Welcome to Fund Undergraduate Awards

Due to the generosity of alumni, the Philosophy Department was able to make several awards to deserving undergraduate philosophy majors. The Kuiper-DeBoer scholarship is based on academic achievement and financial need, while the Matchette Award and the newly-formed Senior Achievement Award are based on academic achievement. The Philosophy Department is grateful to all the past donors whose contributions made it possible to award deserving students in our program. We welcome any donations that will help us continue to support our students’ success.

Ethics Bowl News

Aaron German, a graduate student in our department, runs the Ethics Bowl. In the Fall of 2007, he led team members Chad Reese, Scott Taylor, and Ashley Merrideth to the Central States Regional Ethics Bowl Tournament at Marian College. Of 16 teams in the competition, UK’s team earned enough points to place fourth, and to qualify for the national competition in San Antonio.

In the Spring of 2008, team members Chad Reese, Assia Amry, and Michael Delfino went to San Antonio for the national competition, joining 31 other teams from across the nation who qualified. The team scored well enough in the first three matches to earn a tie for 8th place. It lost the tie-breaker, and did not advance to the elimination tournament. Although the team also had to withdraw from the regional competition for 2009 due to sickness, we applaud the members for making it to 8th place in the nation!
