New Ph.D. Students (2009-10)

James (Eddie) Buchanan 

James earned his BA in philosophy with a minor in chemistry from Centre College (Danville,Ky). His philosophical interests include philosophy of language and existentialism, particularly existenalism in literature and film.  His hobbies include golf and volunteering with/mentoring children. 

Brian Carlson  

Brian graduated from Hanover College with a B.A. in Music, specifically piano performance and a minor in philosophy.  Philosophically, his interests are diverse.  He enjoys classical Greek philosophy, eastern philosophy, ethics, philosophy of mind, and philosophy of art among others.  He loves to read, play electric guitar and piano, and play video games.  He loves animals, and have a pet albino hedgehog named Nemo (not after the fish movie).

Wayne Downs    

Wayne has a B.A. in Pastoral Ministries: Old Testament Studies from Campbellsville University, a M.Div. from Baylor University, and will soon have a M.A. in Philosophy from Texas A&M University. Philosophically, his interests are in history of philosophy, metaethics and epistemology. In particular, his favorite inquiry (to date) deals with the relationships between pain and sympathy, and between sympathy and the establishment of morals. As for his other interests, he enjoys playing sports and doing various types of manual labor, and spending time with his wife, son and two dogs. 

Robert Guerin

I earned my B.A. at Duquesne University where I majored in Philosophy. My philosophical interests are Ancient Epistemology and German Idealism. I focus on questions concerning self-knowledge as it relates to the aforementioned periods and psychoanalysis. In my spare time, I enjoy listening to music and watching sports.

Justin Harmon  

Justin received his MA and BA--both in philosophy--from the University of Houston.  He is primarily interested in phenomenology, 20th Century continental philosophy, aesthetics, and philosophy of mind.  He has recently had a paper accepted for publication in "Consciousness, Literature, and the Arts," which will appear in the August 2009 issue.  His hobbies include:  making experimental electronic/noise music (which he performs with a band called "The They"), running, Esperanto, and baseball.

Kevin Maguire

Kevin earned his B.A. in Philosophy and Religious Studies from Millsaps College (Jackson, MS) in 2005, and his M.A. in Philosophy from the University of Memphis in 2007. For the past two years he has been a full-time Instructor of Philosophy at Southern University in Baton Rouge, LA. His philosophical interests include modern philosophy, the history of the philosophy of race, and theoretical and practical ethics from a Kantian perspective. He enjoys lifting, playing racquetball/tennis, hiking steep inclines without the presence of reptiles, partaking of good beer and exotic fruits, and watching The Simpsons and the Red Sox.

Michael (Ollie) Wiitala

Michael received his B.A. in Philosophy from Ave Maria College (Ypsilanti, MI) in 2005 and his M.A. in Philosophy from Franciscan University of Steubenville, Ohio, in 2008.  His primary philosophical areas of interest are ancient philosophy, phenomenology, hermeneutics, and deconstruction.  He is particularly interested in Plato and in interpreting ancient and medieval philosophy light of 20th century continental philosophy.  He has worked as a carpenter during the summers and when not in school over the past eight years.  In his free time he enjoys classical music, fishing, canoeing, hiking, and being outdoors.
