About the Department

Chair’s Message

As we near the 30th anniversary of our Ph.D. program – we admitted our first PhD student in 1981 and granted our first Ph.D. in 1986 – the University of Kentucky Department of Philosophy finds itself  in the midst of a period of change and transition. The recent retirements of several members of our faculty, combined with the serious budgetary crisis facing the Commonwealth of Kentucky and hence our University, College, and Department and major impeding changes in the General Education Curriculum at the University all present us with major challenges. But we are confident that we will emerge from this time of crisis even stronger than before. Indeed, with the recent addition to our faculty of Professors Clare Batty, Eric Sanday, and Arnold Farr we are already well on our way toward that goal.

Though additional challenges surely lie ahead, the overall quality of our students, both Undergraduate and Graduate, continues to improve, along with the scholarly productivity and professional standing of our individual faculty members and advanced graduate students.

Even though the future remains in some ways uncertain, we are optimistic. We remain committed to maintaining the highest standards of instruction and research and re-affirm our dedication to preserving a broad and balanced faculty and curriculum.

We are also pleased by the success of our graduates and grateful for the continued support of our alumni and patrons. We would like to thank everyone who has contributed to our success and encourage friends and alumni to stay in touch with the Department. We extend a warm welcome to visitors to our site, including prospective students. Please explore the resources available on this site and do not hesitate to contact us with any questions you might have.
