Living in Lexington

The University of Kentucky is located in Lexington, a city of over 280,000 residents in the heart of the Bluegrass-region of Kentucky. Lexington is known as the “Horse Capital of the World” with equine-related business being a major factor in both the local and regional economies. The Kentucky Horse Park, and Keeneland Race Course are two of the standout attractions, and the city will proudly be hosting the 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games.

Lexington has much to offer in the way of cultural and performing arts. The Singletary Center for the Arts, on the UK campus, serves as a bridge between the University and the Lexington community. The Center regularly schedules recitals by faculty members, students, and guest artists and concerts by the University and community groups, throughout the year. In addition, Lexington's Opera House is nationally recognized as one of the most intimate theaters in the country to host Broadway touring companies. The city also proudly claims the Lexington Philmarmonic and the Lexington Ballet. With downtown gallery hops as well as a plethora of spaces to showcase any and all artistic outlets, Lexington is a diverse and eclectic city no matter your tastes. And, speaking of tastes, there are plenty to take in at the Lexington Farmers' Market, providing the very best of local and regional produce and other delectable foods.

Aside from the University of Kentucky’s top-notch athletic teams and facilities, Lexington includes Applebee’s Park, home to the minor league professional baseball team the Lexington Legends.

A short drive can lead to an array of outdoor activities in the region. Kentucky State Parks and the Daniel Boone National Forest which includes the Red River Gorge geological area feature excellent hiking and camping. If you have less time to work with, Raven Run Nature Sanctuary is a short, 20-minute drive from campus and McConell Springs Nature Center is tucked away just outside of downtown. Right here on campus, the Arboretum is a great place to take a simple, relaxing, picturesque walk or run.

With larger metropolitan cities like Cincinnati and Louisville nearby, being located in Lexington strikes a perfect balance of having all the amenities that major cities boast, while still maintaining simpler charms.
