The Past Comes Alive with the Classics Major
Classics is an interdisciplinary program designed to examine the languages, literature, history, philosophy, art and thought of the Greco-Roman world. The classics major encourages students to think critically, research effectively, and develop further their ability to communicate. Students will analyze various works to determine their importance in their own time as well as how they are relevant to the modern world. The classics major or minor compliments many other areas of academic interest including anthropology, art history, English, history, philosophy, mathematics, computer science and the natural sciences.
What skills does studying classics develop?
- critical, theoretical and practical methods for analyzing literary works
- effective collaboration with fellow scholars
- interpreting, assessing and evaluating sources and methods of research
- intellectual flexibility and tolerance of ambiguity
- comprehensive language skills in Latin or Greek

With a firm foundation in the liberal arts tradition, the classics major prepares students to work in various fields including business, law, education, the arts, medicine, research technology and journalism.
