The M.A. committee will recommend to the Graduate Committee and the DGS whether a student is qualified to continue toward the doctorate. The decision to proceed to the Ph.D. program will be made by the Graduate Committee and the DGS. The Graduate School’s time to degree rules make necessary the admission of students to the doctoral program who have a strong chance of finishing a dissertation within these time limits. Should the members of a candidate’s MA committee and the Graduate Committee arrive at conflicting decisions, the two committees will meet to evaluate the candidate’s record and potential before making a decision on whether the candidate shall be permitted to proceed into doctoral work. Normally, the committee will make its decision within 14 days of the examination.
