United States

UNITED STATES HISTORY

Students in U. S. history will be examined in three fields. One of these is a General field that will cover American history from the Colonial period to the present.  This field will have a pre-1865 examiner and a post-1865 examiner. This will be a seven-hour general collaborative exam by two examiners. Students must come up with a book list approved by the two faculty examiners. The second field will be a specialty field which may be defined chronologically or thematically. The field should be defined broadly and must be approved by the major professor and the Director of Graduate Studies. A thematic field such as race, diplomatic, or legal should encompass the chronological span of U. S. history. The third field must be a non-U.S. field and should also be broadly constructed. Students may elect to do a comparative field as long as the focus is not primarily or largely U.S. history.
