STUDY ABROAD PROGRAMS
Kentucky Institute for International Studies in Spain and Mexico (http://www.kiis.org)
The Kentucky Institute for International Studies (KIIS) is a consortium of colleges and universities dedicated to providing quality international education. KIIS is founded on the conviction that an international experience should be part of the education of as many people as possible.
KIIS programs have four primary objectives:
- to establish high-quality, low-cost, academically sound international study programs for students;
- to provide faculty from member institutions a means for professional growth;
- to create language and culture programs for professionals and develop links with their counterparts in foreign countries;
- to promote the study of foreign languages.
KIIS also seeks to develop new opportunities for international experiences which meet the needs of students, faculty, academic institutions, and community organizations, always taking into consideration the changing times and shifting demands of a global society.
The Kentucky Institute for International Studies (KIIS) offers 5-week summer study-abroad programs in Spain, and Mexico, for which there is UK credit. It also offers semester study abroad programs in Mexico and Spain.
•The KIIS Spain summer program will take place in Madrid, Spain’s vibrant capital, and in Segovia, a charming provincial capital in the foothills of the Guadarrama mountains, only 60 miles to the north of Madrid. The locations of both cities make them ideal for excursions, and their diverse natures will provide students with dramatically different experiences of Spain. The pleasantly warm, dry, late-summer weather and the congeniality of the Spanish people lend to both cities a spirit of cordial hospitality. Madrid, on the one hand, is Spain’s most cosmopolitan, culturally varied, and fast-paced city. Segovia, on the other, retains the strong, traditional Spanish character of Old Castile and has a visible history that goes back to pre-Roman times. The cost excludes passport, textbooks, and spending money. The courses will be offered in Spanish language, literature, culture and contemporary affairs. Students should have taken at least two years of college level Spanish.
•The KIIS Mexico summer and fall program in Morelia, Mexico includes tuition, airfare, a room, three meals a day, and excursions, but excludes individual spending money, textbooks, and passport. The program is based in Morelia, a colonial city virtually untouched by tourists, but a thriving cultural center. Courses include Spanish at all levels, and Mexican history and culture.
•KIIS Segovia fall and Spring programs
During the fall and spring semesters KIIS offers a 12-week program in Segovia, Spain. The city of Segovia, only 40 miles from Madrid, offers the comfortable and familiar atmosphere of a small city. The inspiring atmosphere of this medieval city, the peaceful intellectual home for centuries of Jews, and Christians, is an ideal setting in which to interact with a dynamic and upbeat Spanish university population.
