ADMISSION & APPLICATION FOR TEACHING ASSISTANTSHIP

Application for admission are typically received between October and January of the academic year. They require, in addition to the complete application forms, submission of official transcripts, test scores, recommendations, a statement of professional interest and a sample of scholarly writing.

The UK Graduate School and our program requires separate application forms. All applicants should submit GRE scores, to be used as the basis for fellowship elegibility. Foreign applicants must also submit TOEFL scores. A minimum TOEFL score is required in order to be admitted by the Graduate School: a 550 on the paper exam; 213 on the Computer exam; 79 on the Internet/IBT exam.

You will need to submit one set of materials to the Graduate School and one set to the Department of Hispanic Studies. Below is the list of materials to be sent to each office:

To the Graduate School:

  • Official transcripts of all graduate and undergraduate work, with English translations if necessary
  • Official copy of GRE scores, reported by ETS
  • Official copy of TOEFL scores, if required; reported by ETS
  • Application form and fee Form available on website for the Admission to Graduate School

  • Three letters of recommendation from professors in related areas
  • Sample of Scholarly Writing
  • Statement of Purpose
  • Applicants for TAships of Spanish are requested to send a CD of their voice (see directions).

Directions for Voice Recording
Your voice recording must be burned to a cd using MP3 or WAV formatting and should contain the following information:

English Speakers:
1. Begin the recording with a 5 minute (minimum) personal introduction in Spanish (name, address, expected date to enter the program, and a brief statement of your previous academic experiences and personal goals). Please be spontaneous while recording your presentation.
2. Identification, in Spanish, of the reading that will follow.
3. Read a passage in Spanish (2 minutes minimum).

Spanish Speakers:
1. Complete 1 and 2 (above) in English.
2. Read a short passage in Spanish (1 minute minimum).
3. Read a passage in English (2 minutes minimum).

Speakers of Languages other than Spanish or English:
1. Begin the recording with a 5 minute (minimum) personal introduction in English (name, address, expected date to enter the program, and a brief statament of your previous academic experiences and personal goals). Please be spontaneous while recording your presentation.
2. Identification, in Spanish, of the reading that will follow.
3. Read a passage in Spanish (2 minutes minimum)
