GWS has a new look this year and it is a very exciting place to be! The biggest news is that we now offer a major in GWS, and that we are a full-fledged department, rather than a program. Our Graduate Certificate is still going strong and we are working on plans for a future Ph.D. program. For the first time, we have both graduate and undergraduate student organizations, and we encourage our majors, minors and certificate students to join up. It is a great way to get to know your colleagues.

We have eight active core faculty, whose appointments reside wholly or jointly in GWS or who regularly offer courses in the department. These folks teach and write about a range of issues including beauty culture, violence and peacemaking, sexuality, the media, global and local economies, religion and spirituality, gender and the law, post-colonial and critical race theories, and popular culture. Too, there are over 50 affiliated faculty from departments all across campus, many of whom regularly teach in GWS and thus provide us with a compelling set of electives.

We aim for our new department to be an inviting and supportive community.  Come by our office in 112 Breckinridge Hall to say hello, and then have a cup of coffee and relax in our lounge next door.

We look forward to meeting you!

Pat Cooper - Department Chair, GWS
